Anthony Abell College (AAC) in
Seria, Kuala Belait had yesterday officially celebrated its 50th
Anniversary (1952 - 2002) with the presentation of certificates
to former Principals, deputy and ex-students as well as formally
launched its golden jubilee library in conjunction with the
event.
Chief guest was Member of the
State Council, Dato Seri Paduka Hj Abidin bin OKP Abdul Rashid,
an ACC student from 1953 to 1956.
Also present were the Minister
of Education Dato Seri Setia Hj Abdul Aziz bin Dato Seri Paduka
Hj Awg Umar, the Deputy Minister of Finance Dato Paduka Hj Yakub
bin Bakar, Deputy Minister of Education Dato Paduka Hj Suyoi bin
Hj Osman, Commissioner of Police Dato Paduka Seri Awg Hj Abdul
Rahman bin Hj Johan and Pg Lela Cheteria Sahibun Najabah Pg Anak
Hj Abdul Aziz bin Pg Jaya Negara Pg Hj Abu Bakar.
The chief guest said his
presence yesterday morning was a walk on memory lane and that
the sweet and bitter memories in the college were a form of
inspiration and light towards his path in life.
He reminded all students the
most meaningful contribution by His Majesty's Government is the
free education from lower to the highest level.
He urged all students to
benefit from the contribution by studying hard and building
effort to improve knowledge in obtaining skills and capabilities
on suitable fields.
Throughout its age, AAC should
be proud with its achievement such as its success in bearing
local youths who had now accomplished victory in their own field
whether in government or private sector, he added.
The chief guest concluded that
students are the country's most valuable assets and the
country's leadership inheritance in the future.
The college current principal,
Mr Cheong Huat Joo, enlightened everybody with the history of
the school which was established on December 2, 1952 in a
"scout hut" at Jalan Sultan, KB where it was known as
the KB Government English School.
Mr Cheong said the success
achieved by the students in the 1950's till 70's should be taken
as a form of inspiration by all the students.
The college had been managed by
13 principles and deputy principles, and the first local
principal was Dato Paduka Hj Mohd Adnan bin Buntar.
In this historical event, to
appreciate the services contributed in a form of education,
management and administration, past principals and deputy
principals in the college will receive a certificate of
appreciation and a golden jubilee souvenir, he said.
A number of changes, renewal
and positive and dynamic development had been achieved by the
college, such as renovating and maintaining the college
building, the principle noted. He continued to express heartfelt
thanks in his speech to His Majesty's Government which had
prepared a big fund in order to turn the project into a success.
In terms of academics, the
college would strive to increase the efficiency of the students
in all level of examinations,the principal concluded.
The 50th Golden Jubilee
anniversary had started with the singing of the national anthem,
speeches from the principal and chief guest and proceeded with
the recital of Al-Quran by the students.
The event then continued with
the presentation of certificate of appreciation firstly to the
longest serving principal of the college (1965 - 1977) Hj Abu
Farhan Cadogan Edwards Abdullah and continued with Dato Paduka
Hj Mohd Adnan bin Buntar (1977 - 1978), Dato Paduka Hj Suyoi bin
Hj Osman, Hj Bujang bin Hj Masuut (1986 - 1990), Pg Hj Zainal
bin Pg Talib (1990 - 1995), Awg Zainal Abidin bin Mahari and Mr
Koh Hong Puah (1990 - 1994).
The chief guest visited the
college exhibit gallery featuring pictures of former students
and past activities conducted in the college.
He then visited the staff room,
computer and science lab and proceeded to launch the Golden
Jubilee Anniversary library.
Past students of the college in
the 50's were also present and they re-united with former
classmates at the memorable event yesterday.
