A 53-year-old Malaysian who was caught smuggling 12 kilos of chicken wings and 32 packets of Perilly's cigarettes was slapped with a $4,500 fine or 4 months jail by Senior Magistrate Hj Abdullah Soefri after he pleaded guilty in the Magistrate's Court yesterday.

The man, Ho Fuang Lak who has previous convictions of the same nature, was stopped in Kuala Belait by a group of Customs Preventive officers at the ferry area a month ago.

Upon inspecting his car, the officers found the said contraband goods, which were later seized and he was detained for further investigations, Customs Prosecutor ASC Hj Jamil Hj Tuah said.

Investigations revealed that the accused had bought the items from Miri for his own consumption and some were to be sold to his relatives who had requested him to buy the said items from Miri.
