More people joined the nation's
unemployment list as the result of a change of a company's
policy in contracting out its security section.
The number, though less than
ten, had caused enough worries to those retrenched as they were
not given alternatives such as being transferred to another
department.
"We were terminated even
though we were told that we could apply to the security company.
"But we feel it is the
obligation of the company to ensure our uninterrupted employment
since we all have family responsibilities and mouths to
feed," some of those terminated said.
They said the company should
have been more accountable and responsible such as to
specifically request the company who had been awarded the
security contract to take them all in.
"We were given letters
that our services were no longer required as the security of the
company has been contracted out. We were advised to apply to the
contracted company but we are not sure whether we will be
accepted.
"As such we hope through
this publication, the company would ensure that we would not
join the unemployed as we have loans to pay and mouths to
feed," they said.
They said that by being
terminated they have not only lost their fixed monthly salaries
but all the perks such as allowances.
"Being a big company we
had no problems in getting loans from the banks.
"But now it looks like we
will not be able to pay our personal and car loans until we have
new jobs elsewhere," they said.
They had also filed complaints
with the Labour Department, Ministry of Home Affairs as well as
the Management Services Department.
The Labour Department meanwhile
said it is currently investigating the complaints made by some
of those retrenched.
