Sultanate Aims To Be Autism Friendly Nation

Bandar Seri Begawan - The Society for the Management of Autism Related Issues in Training, Education and Resources (SMARTA) continues to intensify its public awareness programme to ensure that Brunei will be an autistic friendly nation.

SMARTA which was formed in September 2001 is a society established as an autism spectrum disorder centre located at the Jigsaw Primary School in Berakas.

School classrooms, social skills training, job training and life-planning services for persons with autism in Brunei have been provided by SMARTA.

The Vice President of SMARTA, Haji Roslan said SMARTA has developed from strength to strength since its establishment two years ago.

SMARTA under its supervision of its President, Malai Haji Abdullah with the cooperation of Mrs Debbie Smith has conducted many activities to instil public awareness on autism.

Haji Roslan also said parents with autistic children should come forward to attain a diagnosis for their child by taking them to the Child Development Centre at the Health Ministry for information on autism and discuss proper planning for their children's development.
