Brunei
By Azlan Othman
Bandar Seri
Begawan - Right Hon. the Lord Mayor of the City of London,
Alderman Gavyn Arthur, will make a four-day visit to Brunei beginning
April 6. He will accompanied by the Lady Mayoress, Miss Carole
Blackshaw, the British High Commission said yesterday.
He heads the Corporation of London,
the local authority for the "Square Mile"-London's financial
centre. The Lord Mayor is an Ambassador for the international business
and financial services industries located in the city of London and
elsewhere in the UK. Although not a member of the UK government, the
Lord Mayor of London holds the equivalent rank of a Cabinet Minister.
The Lord and Lady Mayoress will have
busy schedules in Brunei which will include an early call on the
Minister of Industry and Primary Resources, who is the host for the
visit. They will also make calls on leading figures in the Brunei
market holding responsibilities in economic, financial and investment
policies.
The Lord Mayor and Lady Mayoress,
both of whom are practising lawyers, plan to make courtesy calls on
the Chief Justice and the Attorney-General. They will also attend a
special round table discussion on legal issues in Brunei, moderated by
Mr. Hugh McDermott, who will be representing the Law Society during
the Lord Mayor's visit.
The Lady Mayoress will spend her time
dealing with the themes of education and civil aviation law (the
latter being her speciality). Miss Blackshaw will also meet with
Brunei businesswomen. (Courtesy of Borneo Bulletin)
