The April Fools Day Joke That Came One Day Too Late

Bandar Seri Begawan - The staff of the Hong Kong Bank headquarters at Jalan Pemancha in the capital spilled into the street in force in the afternoon when volumes of smoke began to issue out of the building too late for yesterday.

That caused a minor traffic jam as the Brunei Fire Brigade rushed to the scene to put off the blaze. A large crowd also gathered around the adjoining main street, Jalan Sultan junction.

However things calmed down a bit when everyone was told it was only an exercise.

"That was too late after all. They should have done it yesterday. That would have been a splendid April Fool's Day joke," commented a bank employee.

But for Brunei's vigilant firefighters it was not a joke at all. Neither should it be for anyone else.

"We are constantly conducting drills at all strategic buildings and the Hong Kong Bank building is one such site," said a fire official.
