WO1 (Rtd) Hj Ahmit (right) discussing with Raja
plans to elevate the country's sports standard.
A local company specialising in
sports, fitness and recreation is set to remove the minnows tag
which is often associated with the nation when comes to sports
and sporting activities.
Raja T, the General Manager of
Nin'Tn Sports and Fitness Sdn Bhd at Britannica House in the
capital said the nation has only low achievers in sports because
of its small population.
"With advanced sports
planning and management led by a dedicated sports company, I
believe Brunei Darussalam could one day excel in sports,"
he said, speaking from the experience of a professional in
sports and fitness.
Such task is not impossible, he
said, as "we had witnessed how minnows such as South Korea
can upset the giants as evident in last year's World Cup in
Korea and Japan".
"We cannot leave
everything to the government; the private sector should take the
initiative. Besides, that's how it's like in many countries that
excel in sports," he said adding that the company hopes to
lend a hand in the setting up of the national sports academy
here.
He said the nation has
excellent sports infrastructure and facilities but lacks
maintenance mainly because sports equipment were imported from
distributors in other countries such as Singapore and Malaysia.
"Nin'Tn Sports and Fitness
has an added advantage because we are the only company which
holds sole distributorships with many sports equipment providers
in various parts of the world such as Australia, France and
Malaysia.
He said with such
determination, the company is set to help the nation develop its
sports individuals and try to make it a strong sport-oriented
country through better planning with the younger generation.
He added that apart from
lifting the nation's name, such determination will also helps
the nation to eradicate social-ills because the younger
generation can venture into sports to fill up their time.
Nin'Tn Sports and Fitness was
formed more than two years ago by Warrant Officer 1 (Rtd) Hj
Ahmit Yussof, the managing director who had long been bent on
developing the country's sports reputation.
Hj Ahmit was in fact a former
head of physical training coach of the Royal Brunei Land Forces
before his retirement five years ago. He is also a former
national squash player.
"I have always been
interested in sports," he said.
The company is now the supplier
of fitness equipment to private and public sector. It will also
hold a world-class marathon sometime this year.
