On the first day of April every
year, both the young and the old would come out of their shell
and play tricks on friends and family. And why not? It's April
Fools Day - the day when playing pranks and telling lies are
rather acceptable, socially.
In 16th century France, the
start of a new year fell on April 1. It was celebrated in much
the same way as it is today, with parties that never quite
stopped.
However, when the calendar was
introduced, a small number of people continued to celebrate New
Year's Day on April 1, which drew disapprovals from the
community.
Every first day of April, a
number of people would play pranks on this minority group,
calling their acts "April Fools".
In France today, the first day
of April is called "Poisson d'Avril." French children
fool their friends by taping a paper fish to their back. When
the "young fool" discover this trick, the prankster
would yell "Poisson d'Avril!" which means April fish.
