Top Chinese Community Leader Dies

Bandar Seri Begawan – The appointed leader of the Brunei Chinese, Pehin Kapitan China Kurnia di Raja Awang Pang Boon Ting, aged 74, after a brief illness, died yesterday in his home on Jalan Ong Sum Ping in the Brunei capital.

He left a wife, eight children and 23 grandchildren to mourn his loss.

Born in Taiwan in 1927 he came to Brunei as a little boy of seven to follow relatives. He went to school in Brunei and worked for a time in the business establishments of relatives. He put up his own shop in Muara when he got married in his early 20s.

Always a kind and cheerful person, he came to be widely known among the police because he operated a police canteen at the then police headquarters in the capital, and other smaller canteens in the outskirts.

He also moved up his shop from Muara to the capital.

And through hard work and perseverance, he further prospered and took up a wide variety of businesses.

That included construction and development interests. He became a partner in a number of other ventures. He was a leading businessman in town.

Being the chairman of Jubilee Hotel in the capital, he was one of its major shareholders. In addition, acquired shopping lots, flats and homes and other properties.

He was appointed by Royal Decree the Pehin Kapitan China in 1996 by His Majesty together with  late Pehin Lim Teck Hoo, another former Chinese leader, the same year.

The late Pehin Pang was also the Registrar of Chinese marriages.

He will be buried on Sunday at the Chinese Cemetery in Berakas after the ceremony.
